A boy growing up on a ranch in the Rockies wants to be a surfer. His dad gives him advice that, on the surface, seems to quash this dream, but in the end is instrumental to making it come true.

A young girl loses everything in a fire. Her mother tries to help her make sense of what special objects mean to us, and what happens when they’re gone. Set in and inspired by the recent fires in Lahaina, Maui, where the author and her children used to live.

Cootie Catcher
(Picture Book)
A shy girl must move to a new town. Her grandmother makes her a cootie catcher (paper fortune teller) that the girl uses to help her make friends. What makes this story interesting is that the cootie catcher is magic and makes the fortunes come true—but not in the way the recipients of the fortunes expect.

Twelve Mountain Moons (Picture Book)
A lyrical exploration of how things change over the course of a year. Set in the Colorado mountains, this book uses the traditional American Indian names for each full moon, e.g. Wolf Moon, Snow Moon, Pink Moon, etc. It’s a fresh way to introduce children to—and teach them about—the rhythms of the year.

inbetween (Memoir)
The story of the sudden death of a woman’s 27-year-old brother, with whom she lived, and the band of rag-tag surfers and musicians who helped her survive it. Set in Santa Barbara, California in the mid 2000s.
